feel better mentally this year with therapy in NYCTaking care of your mental health doesn’t start and stop at your therapist’s office!

Mental health often isn’t given the attention it needs, but just like we invest in taking care of our physical health, we get great results when we spend time taking steps to feel better mentally.

5 tips to feel better mentally

You may begin to see improvements in your mental well-being when you try some of these tips.

  • Try keeping a 24 hour stressor log. Once you start making notes, you will have a better idea of what causes stress in your life and each week, and you can then get to work on eliminating one of them.
  • Living with constant demand can leave you feeling guilty about taking a break. Make sure to make time for a short, 3 minute break each hour, to help you unwind and refocus. Fitting a 30 minute break into your day helps to break up the day so you don’t get overwhelmed. And if you’re the one person in the office who never takes all of their vacation days, it’s time to start thinking about how you can give yourself a break!
  • On the subject of taking a break, reducing your daily amount of tech time outside of the office can help you to relax. Take a set amount of time in the evening to answer any emails you need to answer, and then enjoy a bit of freedom from needing to be available to your work contacts.
  • Having boundaries is important for mental well-being. Speak with a friend or spouse about different ways that you can say no to demands that you are unable to fulfill,  and let go of that guilt. It feels great.
  • Keep your memory sharp and your mind active. Try starting some short term mental stimulation exercises such as Sudoku, a crossword puzzle, or reading a book .
