Nostalgia: How the past can nurture the present

A few photos on a white cloth Nostalgia is defined as “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past. Typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.”

An integral aspect of nostalgia is a feeling of slight sadness associated with the loss of that particular time and place but it also carries a sense of romance. The truth is, nostalgia and reminiscing about the past can nurture the present and possibly guide your future.

Svetlana Boym, a writer and professor, found nostalgia can be thought of in two ways, restorative and reflective. Restorative nostalgia can bring about action. It can urge to take action with the hopes of bringing what you’ve lost from the past back into the future. Reflective nostalgia does not inspire action rather it induces a walk down memory lane. In this case, the memory itself is enough to evoke a feeling of satisfaction.

When nostalgia can be comforting

Researchers have found even though they are triggered by negative mood or loneliness, nostalgic narratives tend to be more positive than negative. Additionally, nostalgia generates positive emotions, increase self-esteem and encourage social connectedness.

For those going through transitional periods in their life such as early years in university or marriage, nostalgia can serve as a comfort. It elevates positive feelings and can get you through a tough time. One of the reasons nostalgia is useful during these times is it creates a sense of continuity between our past and our future. In this context, it can be especially useful when we are transitioning from one stage of life to another.

Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges of the good old days.

If you’re feeling stressed or anxious …

Bring back a pleasurable experience from the past. One of the best ways to do this is with food. Cook up a favorite dish mom used to make and watch a TV show from the good old days.

Music that you listened to from the ages of 12 to 22 is especially powerful and will bring back powerful memories from this profound period of growth and development in your life.

When you are strolling down memory lane, rather than focus on the sad feelings of loss, you can use the sweet feelings of nostalgia to motivate you. Nostalgic memories can inspire creativity, increase optimism, and bring a sense of meaning into the present.
