“WTF Is Mental Health?”

In his short documentary, “WTF Is Mental Heath?”, Kobi Siriboe makes an urgent case to discuss black mental health. His documentary explores mental health in the black community and questions some of the preconceived notions people have about mental illness.

Siriboe wants people to have honest discussions about this topic that is often taboo and pushed under the rug. In his film, Siriboe introduces seven individuals who get real about their mental health journeys and challenges they faced.

The urgent need to discuss black mental health

Although the subject is often stigmatized, the need to bring mental health issues to the surface is pressing. A report published in JAMA Pediatrics revealed that black kids ages 5 to 12 are twice as likely as white kids to commit suicide.

Siriboe emphasizes the importance of having an outlet to express emotion. Many people in the black community bottle up emotions, which only makes the rates of mental illness and suicide worse. According to Siriboe, refusing to be vulnerable isn’t a strength. It disconnects a person from their community and loved ones who want to help.

Siriboe hopes that this documentary will spark discourse about black mental health and cultivate an environment where people can heal.
